Finger Lakes Weekend Getaway
Wineries, waterfalls, and glacial lakes — 45 minutes from Rochester
The Finger Lakes is the most natural weekend escape from Rochester — 11 glacial lakes carved by retreating ice sheets, surrounded by gorges, waterfalls, and some of the best wine country in the eastern United States.
Seneca and Cayuga are the largest lakes, but Keuka, Canandaigua, and Skaneateles each have their own character. The region rewards slow travel: a morning hike through a gorge, an afternoon on the wine trail, and dinner watching the sun drop behind the water.
Quick facts
Best time to go
Peak foliage, harvest season on the wine trails, cooler hiking weather. The most popular time — book accommodations early.
Warm lake swimming, full winery hours, kayaking and boat tours. Watkins Glen is busiest in July and August.
Waterfalls are at peak flow after snowmelt. Fewer crowds, lower prices. Some wineries have limited hours before Memorial Day.
Many wineries stay open on weekends. Ice wine tastings are a regional specialty. Expect cold and some road closures in gorge parks.
Getting there
Note: No direct train or bus service to the wine trails — a car is essential for the Finger Lakes.
Things to do
Watkins Glen Gorge Trail
HikingWalk the 1.5-mile gorge trail past 19 waterfalls carved into ancient rock. One of the most stunning short hikes in the Northeast — arrive early on summer weekends to beat the crowds.
Tip: Start at the main entrance on N. Franklin St. The gorge trail is one-way; return via the Indian Trail above.
Seneca Lake Wine Trail
WineDrive the Seneca Lake Wine Trail and stop at 3–4 family-owned wineries. Rieslings and dry rosés are the regional specialty. Most tastings are $5–$15 and include 5–6 pours.
Tip: Hermann J. Wiemer, Lamoreaux Landing, and Bloomer Creek are standouts on the east side of the lake.
Taughannock Falls State Park
NatureTaughannock Falls drops 215 feet — taller than Niagara. The easy 1.5-mile round-trip gorge trail leads right to the base. The overlook trail offers a dramatic top-down view.
Tip: The gorge trail is stroller-friendly. Visit in spring for maximum water flow.
Cayuga Lake Paddle
AdventureRent a kayak or canoe from several outfitters along Cayuga Lake. The calm southern end near Ithaca is ideal for beginners; the northern end near Cayuga has more open water.
Tip: Taughannock Point and Long Point State Park are excellent launch spots.
Seneca Falls — Women's Rights NHP
HistoryThe birthplace of the American women's rights movement. The National Park site includes the Declaration of Sentiments exhibit and the restored Wesleyan Chapel where the 1848 convention was held.
Tip: Combine with a stop at the Women's Rights National Historical Park visitor center.
Corning Museum of Glass
CultureThe world's most comprehensive glass museum — 45 minutes south of Watkins Glen. Watch master glassblowers, try glassblowing yourself, and explore 3,500 years of glass history.
Tip: Book a Make Your Own Glass experience in advance. The hot glass shows run throughout the day.
