The Hamptons
Long Island's legendary stretch of ocean beaches, estate villages, and summer culture — all within reach of New York City.
The Hamptons is not one place — it's a string of villages along the South Fork of Long Island, each with its own personality. Southampton is old money and polo fields. East Hampton is galleries and celebrity sightings. Montauk is surfers and clam shacks at the end of the island. Sag Harbor is a historic whaling village turned literary enclave.
Summer is the main event: the Atlantic beaches are among the finest on the East Coast, the restaurant scene rivals Manhattan, and the social calendar runs from Memorial Day to Labor Day without pause. But shoulder seasons — late May and September — offer the same scenery with a fraction of the crowds and prices.
From New York City, the Hamptons is a 2-hour drive on a good day (budget 3 hours on a Friday afternoon). The Long Island Rail Road runs to Southampton and East Hampton year-round, making it one of the few beach destinations in the Northeast that's genuinely car-optional.
Quick Facts
Best Time to Visit
Peak beach season with warm Atlantic water, full restaurant and nightlife calendars, and the Hamptons social scene at full tilt. Book lodging 2–3 months out. Expect Friday traffic on the LIE.
Beaches are uncrowded, restaurants are open and eager, and prices are 30–40% lower than July. The Hamptons in May is a genuinely underrated weekend.
September is arguably the best month — warm water, empty beaches, and the farm stands are at peak harvest. The Hamptons Film Festival runs in October.
Most restaurants and shops close or go to limited hours. The beaches are dramatic and empty. A handful of year-round spots in Sag Harbor and Southampton stay open.
Things to Do
Ocean Beaches
OutdoorsMain Beach in East Hampton is consistently ranked among the best beaches in the US — wide, clean, and backed by dunes. Cooper's Beach in Southampton has a full lifeguard service and a parking lot that fills by 9 AM on summer weekends. Coopers and Main are the two to prioritize.
Guild Hall & Art Galleries
ArtsEast Hampton's Guild Hall has been the cultural anchor of the Hamptons since 1931 — exhibitions, theater, and film screenings year-round. The village also has a dense cluster of serious commercial galleries along Main Street and Newtown Lane, including Tripoli Gallery and Romany Kramoris.
Sag Harbor Village
HistorySag Harbor was a major whaling port in the 19th century and still has the architecture to prove it. Walk Main Street past the Custom House, the Old Whalers' Church, and the American Hotel. The Sag Harbor Cinema is a beautifully restored 1930s movie house.
Farm Stands & Vineyards
FoodThe North Fork wine region is 45 minutes away, but the South Fork has its own farm stand culture. Bhumi Farms, Amber Waves, and Pike Farms all sell direct. Wolffer Estate Vineyard in Sagaponack has a summer rosé culture that's become its own Hamptons institution.
Kayaking & Paddleboarding
OutdoorsThe bays on the north side of the South Fork — Mecox Bay, Georgica Pond, Noyac Bay — are calm, warm, and largely uncrowded. Peconic Paddler in Riverhead rents kayaks and SUPs; several outfitters operate out of Sag Harbor as well.
Montauk Lighthouse
LandmarkThe easternmost point of New York State, commissioned by George Washington in 1792. The lighthouse is open for tours and the surrounding Montauk Point State Park has dramatic bluff walks above the Atlantic. Worth the extra 30-minute drive from East Hampton.
2-Day Hamptons Itinerary
East Hampton & the Beach
Arrive early and head straight to Main Beach in East Hampton before the crowds. Rent chairs and an umbrella from the beach concession. The water is warmest in August — genuinely swimmable from late June through September.
Walk into East Hampton village for lunch. Lunch at Nick & Toni's if you're splurging; the Golden Pear Cafe for a lighter, cheaper option. Browse the galleries on Newtown Lane and Main Street.
Drive to Wolffer Estate Vineyard in Sagaponack for a rosé tasting on the lawn. The vineyard is open daily in summer and the setting — rolling vines, Adirondack chairs, live music on weekends — is quintessentially Hamptons.
Dinner in East Hampton. Moby's for a lively outdoor scene; Dopo La Spiaggia for Italian in a garden setting. Walk the village after dinner — the architecture along Lily Pond Lane and Further Lane is worth seeing at dusk.
Sag Harbor & Montauk
Start in Sag Harbor. Coffee at Corner Bar, then walk Main Street to the Custom House and Old Whalers' Church. Browse the independent bookshop and the antique dealers on Division Street.
Drive out to Montauk (30 min from Sag Harbor). Lunch at Duryea's Lobster Deck on Fort Pond Bay — lobster rolls and cold beer on picnic tables over the water. Arrive before noon to avoid the wait.
Continue to Montauk Point State Park and the lighthouse. Walk the bluff trail above the Atlantic. On the way back, stop at Ditch Plains Beach — the best surf break on Long Island and a great people-watching spot even if you're not surfing.
Head back toward Southampton for dinner before the drive home. The Driver's Seat in Southampton is a classic Hamptons bar and grill that's been there since 1971. Or stop at Tutto Il Giorno in Sag Harbor for a quieter Italian send-off.
