Skiers, hikers, history buffs, families

Lake Placid is the only American city to have hosted the Winter Olympics twice — 1932 and 1980. The 1980 Games produced the Miracle on Ice, one of the most famous moments in sports history, and the Olympic infrastructure is still here and still in use. You can watch ski jumpers train on the same jumps, ride the bobsled run, and skate on the same oval where Eric Heiden won five gold medals.

Beyond the Olympics, Lake Placid sits in the heart of the Adirondack High Peaks. Mirror Lake runs through the center of the village. Whiteface Mountain — the only Adirondack peak with a lift-served ski area — rises just 8 miles away. In summer the hiking is world-class; in winter the skiing and Nordic trails are among the best in the Northeast. It is a genuinely four-season destination, and three hours from Rochester.

Best time to go

SpringMud season

Trails are muddy and wet through May. Ski season ends in April. Not the ideal time to visit — save it for summer or winter.

SummerBest

Peak hiking season. All 46 High Peaks accessible. Mirror Lake is warm enough to swim. Olympic sites fully open for tours. The village is lively but not overcrowded. Book lodging early for July and August.

FallGreat

The High Peaks turn brilliant in early October. Fewer crowds than summer, lower prices, and the best foliage views in the Adirondacks. Trails are dry and fast. Whiteface toll road closes in mid-October.

WinterBest

Whiteface Mountain is the best ski mountain in the East for vertical drop (3,430 ft). Nordic trails, bobsled rides, and the Olympic atmosphere make this the premier winter weekend in upstate New York. Book well in advance for holiday weekends.

What to do

Whiteface Mountain

Must-do

The only Adirondack High Peak with lift-served skiing — 3,430 feet of vertical drop, the most in the East outside of Vermont. In summer the Whiteface Veterans Memorial Highway toll road drives to within 300 feet of the summit, with views stretching to Montreal on clear days. The castle at the summit houses an elevator to the top.

Olympic Sites

Must-do

The 1980 Olympic venues are still active and open to visitors. The Olympic Center on Main Street has the original hockey rink where the Miracle on Ice happened. The ski jump complex offers tours and you can watch jumpers train year-round. The bobsled and luge track at Mount Van Hoevenberg runs public rides in winter. The speed skating oval is open for public skating.

High Peaks Hiking

Hiking

The Adirondack 46ers list 46 peaks over 4,000 feet, all within a day's drive of Lake Placid. Mount Marcy (5,344 ft) is the highest point in New York State — a 14.8-mile round trip from the Adirondack Loj. Algonquin Peak is shorter and has better views. Wright Peak is the best half-day hike. All trailheads are within 10 miles of the village.

Mirror Lake

Lake

A small, pristine lake that runs through the center of the village. In summer: kayak and canoe rentals, paddleboard, and swimming from the public beach. In winter: the lake freezes solid and hosts ice skating, ice fishing, and the famous Lake Placid Winter Carnival events. The 2.7-mile loop around the lake is the best easy walk in the region.

Lake Placid Village

Village

Main Street is one of the best small-town main streets in upstate New York — lined with independent restaurants, gear shops, galleries, and the Olympic Museum. The village is compact and walkable. The Lake Placid Center for the Arts hosts concerts and performances year-round. The farmers market runs Saturday mornings in summer.

Nordic Skiing and Snowshoeing

Nordic

The Mount Van Hoevenberg Nordic Center has 50 kilometers of groomed cross-country ski trails — the same trails used in the 1980 Olympics. Snowshoe rentals are available for the ungroomed backcountry trails. The facility is one of the finest Nordic centers in the country and far less crowded than Whiteface on weekends.

2-day itinerary

Day 1

Olympic sites + Mirror Lake + Village

Morning

Drive from Rochester (3 hrs via I-90 E to I-87 N to NY-73 W). Arrive in Lake Placid late morning. Check in and walk to the Olympic Center on Main Street. The Miracle on Ice rink is inside — you can skate on it in winter or tour it in summer.

Afternoon

Drive 5 minutes to the ski jump complex for a tour and to watch jumpers train. Then head to Mount Van Hoevenberg for a bobsled ride (winter) or a mountain bike session (summer). Allow 2 hours.

Late afternoon

Return to the village. Walk the 2.7-mile Mirror Lake loop — the best easy walk in the Adirondacks. Rent a kayak or paddleboard if the weather is good.

Evening

Dinner on Main Street. The Generations Restaurant at the Mirror Lake Inn is the best in town. Lake Placid Pub and Brewery is the best casual option. Walk the village after dinner.

Day 2

Whiteface Mountain

Morning

Winter: Full day at Whiteface Mountain. Buy lift tickets online in advance — they sell out on peak weekends. The summit chair has the best views in the Adirondacks. Summer: Drive the Whiteface Veterans Memorial Highway toll road to the summit. The drive takes 30 minutes and the views are extraordinary.

Afternoon

Summer option: Hike Algonquin Peak (5,114 ft) from the Adirondack Loj — 8 miles round trip with 2,936 feet of elevation gain. The best summit view in the High Peaks. Allow 5-6 hours. Winter option: Afternoon runs on Whiteface, then the Olympic speed skating oval for a public skate session.

Late afternoon

Head home via NY-73 E to I-87 S to I-90 W. The drive back to Rochester takes about 3 hours. Stop in Keene Valley for a late lunch at the Noon Mark Diner if you are hungry.
