Western New York
Letchworth State Park Weekend
Three waterfalls, a 600-foot gorge, and hot air balloons — 1 hour from Rochester
Letchworth State Park is one of the most spectacular natural areas in the eastern United States. The Genesee River has carved a 17-mile gorge up to 600 feet deep, dropping over three major waterfalls — Upper, Middle, and Lower Falls — before continuing north toward Lake Ontario.
Called the Grand Canyon of the East, Letchworth rewards every season. Fall foliage turns the gorge walls into a wall of color. Summer brings hot air balloon rides over the canyon at dawn. Winter reveals frozen waterfalls and silent snow-covered trails. It's the most underrated day trip — and overnight destination — within an hour of Rochester.

Things to do
Gorge Trail — Middle & Upper Falls
HikingThe signature Letchworth experience: walk the gorge trail from Middle Falls to Upper Falls, watching the Genesee River drop over three successive waterfalls. Middle Falls is the most dramatic — 107 feet wide and 70 feet tall. Upper Falls has a natural swimming hole below it.
Tip: Start at the Middle Falls parking area. The gorge trail is mostly flat and well-maintained. Bring water — there are no services on the trail.
Hot Air Balloon Ride
AdventureLetchworth is one of the best hot air balloon destinations in the Northeast — the gorge creates dramatic lift and the views of the waterfalls from above are extraordinary. Balloons launch at dawn from the meadows near the Castile entrance.
Tip: Book with Balloons Over Letchworth at least 2 weeks in advance. Flights are weather-dependent — they'll reschedule if conditions aren't right.
Rim Trail Hike
HikingThe 7-mile rim trail runs along the top of the gorge with continuous views down to the river and waterfalls. You can hike the full length or pick a section — the stretch from the Glen Iris Inn to Lower Falls overlook is the most scenic.
Tip: The rim trail is more strenuous than the gorge trail. Wear sturdy shoes — the path is rocky in sections.
Lower Falls Swimming Area
NatureThe natural swimming area below Lower Falls is one of the best freshwater swimming spots in western New York. The water is cold and clear, and the falls create a natural backdrop. Open in summer when water levels are safe.
Tip: Arrive early on summer weekends — the parking area fills by 10am. Bring water shoes; the riverbed is rocky.
Cross-Country Skiing
WinterLetchworth maintains groomed cross-country ski trails through the gorge forest when snow conditions allow. The trails range from beginner-friendly loops to longer routes with gorge views. Equipment rentals are available at the park.
Tip: Call ahead to confirm trail conditions — the park updates snow reports on their website. Best conditions are typically January through February.
Mary Jemison Gravesite & Seneca Council House
HistoryThe park preserves the grave of Mary Jemison, the 'White Woman of the Genesee,' who lived with the Seneca Nation for over 70 years. The nearby Seneca Council House is a reconstructed longhouse with exhibits on Haudenosaunee history.
Tip: Located near the Glen Iris Inn. A quiet, moving stop that adds historical depth to the natural experience.
