Stowe, Vermont
Vermont's most celebrated mountain village — world-class skiing on Mount Mansfield, the most spectacular fall foliage drive in New England, and a classic village green surrounded by farm-to-table restaurants and artisan shops.
Stowe sits at the base of Mount Mansfield — Vermont's highest peak — in the northern Green Mountains, about 3.5 hours from Rochester via I-90 east and I-89 north. It's the most famous ski town in the eastern United States, and the resort has been drawing visitors since the 1930s. But Stowe is genuinely a four-season destination, and fall may be when it's most beautiful.
The Mountain Road (Route 108) runs from the village up to the ski resort, lined with inns, restaurants, and shops. The Notch Road — Route 108 north through Smugglers' Notch — is one of the most dramatic drives in New England, a narrow road that squeezes between 1,000-foot cliff walls and is closed to RVs and trailers. In October, the combination of the Notch Road and the surrounding Green Mountains produces fall foliage that consistently ranks among the best in the country.
The village itself is compact and walkable — a white-steepled church, a covered bridge, independent shops, and a cluster of excellent restaurants. The Stowe Recreation Path runs 5.3 miles along the West Branch River, connecting the village to the Mountain Road corridor. It's one of the most pleasant flat walks or bike rides in Vermont, and it's free.
Best Time to Visit
Stowe rewards visitors in every season — each one offers a completely different version of the same beautiful village.
Apr–May
Mud season — ski season ends in April and the trails are wet. The village is quiet and prices drop significantly. Maple sugaring season (March–April) is a genuine Vermont experience worth timing a visit around.
Jun–Aug
Hiking, cycling the Recreation Path, and the full village experience without ski-season crowds. The gondola runs to the summit of Mount Mansfield. Warm days, cool nights, and green mountains in every direction.
Sep–Oct
Peak foliage typically hits the first two weeks of October. The Notch Road drive at peak color is one of the most spectacular experiences in New England. Book 3–4 months ahead — October weekends sell out completely.
Nov–Mar
Stowe Ski Resort has 116 trails on two mountains, the best snow in Vermont, and a ski village atmosphere that's hard to match in the East. January and February offer the best conditions. Book ski packages well in advance.
Things to Do
The mountain and the village are the twin anchors. In every season, the Recreation Path and the Notch Road are worth your time.
Stowe Mountain Resort
Skiing116 trails across Mount Mansfield and Spruce Peak, connected by a gondola. The longest run is 3.7 miles. Stowe consistently ranks among the top ski resorts in the East for terrain variety and snow quality. The ski village at Spruce Peak has shops, restaurants, and slope-side lodging.
💡 Book lift tickets online in advance — walk-up prices are significantly higher. The Gondola SkyRide to the summit runs year-round for non-skiers.
Smugglers' Notch Drive
Scenic DriveRoute 108 north through Smugglers' Notch is one of the most dramatic roads in New England — a narrow pass between 1,000-foot cliff walls with boulders that have tumbled onto the roadside. In October, the foliage in the Notch is extraordinary. The road is closed in winter.
💡 Drive it in both directions — the views change completely. Stop at the large boulder pullouts to walk among the cliff walls. Closed to vehicles over 10 feet wide.
Stowe Recreation Path
Cycling & WalkingA 5.3-mile paved path running along the West Branch River from the village to the Mountain Road corridor. Flat, scenic, and free. Bike rentals are available in the village. One of the most pleasant recreational paths in Vermont.
💡 Rent bikes at AJ's Ski & Sports or Stowe Mountain Outfitters. The path is best in the morning before the Mountain Road gets busy.
Mount Mansfield Summit
HikingVermont's highest peak (4,393 feet) offers panoramic views from the Long Trail ridge. The Gondola SkyRide takes you to the summit in summer and fall. The Long Trail traverse along the ridge is one of the best hikes in Vermont.
💡 The Gondola SkyRide is the easiest way to the summit — buy tickets at the base lodge. For hikers, the Toll Road trail is the most direct route on foot.
Stowe Village
VillageThe village center has a classic Vermont character — a white-steepled church, a covered bridge over the West Branch River, independent bookshops, galleries, and a farmers market. The main street is compact and entirely walkable.
💡 The Stowe Farmers Market (Sundays, May through October) is one of the best in Vermont. The covered bridge on Brook Road is a short walk from the village center.
Ben & Jerry's Factory Tour
FamilyThe original Ben & Jerry's factory is in Waterbury, 10 minutes south of Stowe on I-89. Factory tours run daily and include a free sample at the end. The Flavor Graveyard behind the factory is a Vermont institution.
💡 Arrive early — tours sell out on summer and fall weekends. The Scoop Shop at the factory has flavors not available elsewhere.
2-Day Itinerary

Arrive and walk the village
Park once and walk the village center — the covered bridge, the church, the main street shops. It takes about an hour and orients you to the town.
Stowe Recreation Path
Rent bikes or walk the Recreation Path along the West Branch River. The 5.3-mile path is flat and scenic — do the full length or just the village-to-Mountain Road stretch.

Smugglers' Notch drive (fall/summer only)
Drive Route 108 north through the Notch — stop at the boulder pullouts and walk among the cliff walls. In October, this is the highlight of the trip. Closed in winter.
Depart for Rochester
The drive back via I-89 south and I-87 north takes about 3.5 hours. Leave by 5–6 PM to arrive home at a reasonable hour.
Where to Eat
Stowe has a restaurant scene that punches well above its size — farm-to-table cooking anchored by Vermont dairy, maple, and local farms.
Hen of the Wood
The most acclaimed restaurant in Stowe — a converted gristmill on the West Branch River serving hyper-local Vermont ingredients with exceptional technique. One of the best restaurants in New England. Reservations essential weeks in advance.
Must try: The seasonal tasting menu — the kitchen's best work changes with what Vermont farms are producing
The Bench
A lively gastropub on the Mountain Road with a wood-fired oven, Vermont craft beers, and a menu that goes well beyond typical pub fare. The most reliably good casual option in Stowe.
Must try: The wood-fired pizza and a local Vermont IPA — the combination is exactly right for a ski-town evening
Piecasso Pizzeria
A beloved Stowe institution serving creative pizzas in a casual, lively space. The best value meal in town and a perennial favorite with locals and repeat visitors.
Must try: The Vermont pizza — local cheddar, maple-glazed bacon, and caramelized onions on a thin crust
Harrison's Restaurant
A classic Stowe restaurant in the village center with a warm, traditional atmosphere and a menu of well-executed American classics. A reliable choice for a relaxed dinner without the wait at Hen of the Wood.
Must try: The Vermont cheddar soup — a local classic done well, especially on a cold evening
Idletyme Brewing
A well-regarded craft brewery on the Mountain Road with house-brewed beers and a food menu that includes excellent burgers and Vermont cheese plates. Good outdoor seating in summer.
Must try: The seasonal IPA and the Vermont cheese board — a perfect après-ski or après-hike combination
