Catskills Weekend Getaway

Bohemian villages, world-class fly fishing, waterfall hikes, and ski slopes — 3.5 hours from Rochester

3 hr 30 min from Rochester
From $120/person/night
Hikers, artists, fly fishers, skiers, couples

The Catskills are a different kind of mountain escape. Unlike the Adirondacks — which are about wilderness and scale — the Catskills are about character. Small towns with serious restaurants, art galleries next to bait shops, and a creative energy that has drawn writers, painters, and musicians since the 19th century. Woodstock is the most famous of these towns, but the region rewards exploration.

The landscape itself is spectacular. Kaaterskill Falls is the tallest two-tiered waterfall in the Northeast. The Catskill Center protects over 700,000 acres of forest. The Beaverkill and Willowemoc rivers are the birthplace of American fly fishing. And in winter, Hunter Mountain and Windham Mountain offer some of the best skiing within a day's drive of Rochester.

Best time to go

SpringGood

Waterfalls are at peak flow after snowmelt. Fly fishing season opens in April. Mud season on trails through mid-May. Fewer crowds and lower prices.

SummerGreat

Warm, green, and lively. Best for hiking, swimming holes, and the full Woodstock arts scene. Weekends get crowded in July and August — book lodging early.

FallBest

Peak foliage typically hits the second and third weeks of October. The Catskills turn brilliant red and gold. This is the most popular season — prices spike and lodging books out weeks in advance.

WinterSki season

Hunter Mountain and Windham Mountain are the draws. Good snowmaking infrastructure means reliable conditions December through March. Cozy inns and far fewer crowds than fall.

What to do

Kaaterskill Falls

Must-do

The tallest two-tiered waterfall in the Northeast at 260 feet — taller than Niagara. A 1.5-mile round-trip hike from the Laurel House Road trailhead. The upper falls are the main attraction; the lower falls require a steeper scramble. Go on a weekday in summer to avoid the crowds.

Woodstock

Culture

The most famous small town in the Catskills — and the actual site of the 1969 festival (which was held in Bethel, 60 miles away, but Woodstock claimed the name). Today it is a genuine arts village with galleries, independent bookshops, yoga studios, and some of the best restaurants in the region. Walk Tinker Street on a Saturday afternoon.

Fly Fishing the Beaverkill

Fishing

The Beaverkill River in Roscoe is the birthplace of American dry-fly fishing. The Catskill Fly Fishing Center and Museum in Livingston Manor tells the full story. The Willowemoc and Delaware rivers are also world-class. Guided half-day trips are available from several outfitters in Roscoe.

Hiking the Catskill 3500s

Hiking

The Catskill 3500 Club lists 35 peaks over 3,500 feet. Slide Mountain (4,180 ft) is the highest and most rewarding — a 6-mile round trip with panoramic views. Blackhead Mountain and the Devil's Path are for experienced hikers. The Escarpment Trail above Kaaterskill Clove offers some of the best ridge walking in the Northeast.

Skiing Hunter and Windham

Skiing

Hunter Mountain has the most vertical drop in the Catskills (1,600 ft) and the best snowmaking in the Northeast. Windham Mountain is smaller but less crowded, with a more relaxed atmosphere. Both are 3.5 to 4 hours from Rochester — a long day trip but a comfortable overnight.

Swimming Holes

Summer

The Catskills have some of the best natural swimming holes in New York. Peekamoose Blue Hole on the Rondout Creek is the most famous — a deep, cold, turquoise pool in the forest. Peck's Falls in Margaretville and the swimming holes along Woodland Valley Creek are less crowded alternatives.
