Watkins Glen
Nineteen waterfalls in two miles, the largest Finger Lake at your doorstep, and a wine trail that stretches the length of Seneca Lake.
Watkins Glen State Park is one of the great short hikes in the eastern United States. The Gorge Trail winds through a narrow limestone canyon carved by Glen Creek, passing 19 waterfalls in under two miles. The trail is well-maintained, heavily visited in summer, and genuinely spectacular — the kind of place that earns its reputation.
The village of Watkins Glen sits at the southern tip of Seneca Lake, the largest and deepest of the Finger Lakes. The Seneca Lake Wine Trail — 35 wineries along both shores — starts here and runs north for 35 miles. The combination of a world-class gorge hike and one of New York's best wine regions in the same afternoon is hard to beat.
Watkins Glen International, the legendary road racing circuit that hosted Formula 1 from 1961 to 1980, sits just outside the village. The track still runs major events including NASCAR Cup Series races, drawing large crowds in summer. From Rochester it's a straight 1.5-hour drive south on Route 390 and Route 14.
Quick Facts
Best Time to Visit
The gorge is at its most lush and the waterfalls run strong. The wine trail is fully open. Watkins Glen International hosts NASCAR and other major racing events — check the schedule before booking if you want to attend or avoid the crowds. Book lodging well in advance for race weekends.
Peak foliage in October turns the gorge walls and surrounding hills into a color show. The wine trail is in harvest season. Crowds thin after Labor Day. One of the best times to hike the gorge — cooler temperatures and dramatic light.
The waterfalls run at maximum volume from snowmelt and spring rain — the gorge is at its most powerful. The wine trail begins its spring season. Fewer crowds than summer and lower prices. Some trail sections may be wet or partially closed after heavy rain.
The gorge trail closes in winter. The wine trail goes to reduced hours. The village is quiet. Not a recommended season unless you are combining with Hunter Mountain skiing (1.5 hrs east) or Corning Museum of Glass (30 min south).
Things to Do
Gorge Trail — Watkins Glen State Park
OutdoorsThe signature experience. The Gorge Trail runs 1.9 miles through a narrow limestone canyon carved by Glen Creek, passing 19 waterfalls including Cavern Cascade (where the trail passes behind the falls), Rainbow Falls, and Central Cascade. The trail involves stairs and can be slippery — wear proper footwear. Allow 1.5–2 hours. Arrive early in summer; the parking area fills by 9 AM on weekends.
Indian Trail & Rim Trail
OutdoorsThe Indian Trail runs above the gorge on the south rim, offering elevated views down into the canyon. The Rim Trail on the north side connects back to the entrance. Together they form a 5-mile loop with the Gorge Trail — a full half-day hike that shows the park from every angle. The rim trails are less crowded than the gorge floor.
Seneca Lake Wine Trail
FoodThe Seneca Lake Wine Trail — 35 wineries along both shores of the largest Finger Lake — starts at the southern tip of the lake in Watkins Glen. Lamoreaux Landing (east shore, stunning hilltop tasting room), Hazlitt 1852 Vineyards (east shore, lively atmosphere), and Atwater Estate Vineyards (east shore, excellent Riesling) are all within 20 minutes north. Budget 45 minutes per winery; two stops is a comfortable afternoon.
Watkins Glen International
AdventureThe legendary road racing circuit that hosted Formula 1 from 1961 to 1980 sits 3 miles outside the village. The track runs major events year-round including the NASCAR Cup Series race in August and the Sahlen's Six Hours of the Glen in June. On non-race weekends the track is quiet, but the history is palpable — the original street circuit ran through the village itself from 1948 to 1952.
Seneca Lake Cruises
OutdoorsCaptain Bill's Seneca Lake Cruises runs sightseeing and dinner cruises from the Watkins Glen waterfront. The lake is 38 miles long and 618 feet deep — one of the deepest lakes in the US. A 90-minute sightseeing cruise gives a perspective on the scale of the Finger Lakes that you can't get from the shore.
Watkins Glen Village & Waterfront
CultureThe village waterfront on Seneca Lake has a marina, a public park, and Seneca Harbor Station — the best outdoor dining spot in the area. Franklin Street, the main commercial street, has a handful of independent shops and restaurants. The village is small but walkable and a pleasant base for the surrounding region.
2-Day Watkins Glen Itinerary
The Gorge & the Wine Trail
Arrive at Watkins Glen State Park when it opens. Start the Gorge Trail early — by 9 AM on summer weekends the parking area is full and the trail is crowded. The trail runs 1.9 miles through the canyon, passing 19 waterfalls. Cavern Cascade, where the trail passes behind the falls, is the highlight. Allow 1.5–2 hours for the gorge floor trail.
Return via the Indian Trail on the south rim for elevated canyon views, then drive down to the waterfront for lunch at Seneca Harbor Station. Outdoor seating on the lake, lobster rolls, fish and chips, and cold drinks. Walk the waterfront after lunch and browse the village.
Drive north on Route 414 along the east shore of Seneca Lake for the wine trail. Lamoreaux Landing is 15 minutes north — a hilltop tasting room with panoramic lake views and excellent Riesling and Chardonnay. Continue north to Hazlitt 1852 Vineyards for a livelier atmosphere and their famous Red Cat. Two wineries is a comfortable afternoon.
Return to Watkins Glen for dinner. Castel Grisch Winery has a restaurant with lake views and a menu that pairs well with their estate wines. Or the Wildflower Cafe on Franklin Street for a more casual option. Check the Watkins Glen International schedule — on race weekends the village is lively well into the evening.
Rim Trail, Racing & Corning
Return to the state park for the Rim Trail loop if you only did the gorge floor on Day 1. Or drive 3 miles to Watkins Glen International for a look at the track — on non-race weekends you can often drive the pit lane road and see the facility up close. The track museum is worth 30 minutes.
Drive south 30 minutes to Corning for lunch in the Gaffer District. Sorge's Restaurant on Market Street is the local institution. After lunch, walk Market Street and browse the galleries and antique shops.
The Corning Museum of Glass is 30 minutes south and one of the great museums in New York State. If you have time before the drive home, even 2 hours in the museum is worthwhile. The Hot Glass Show runs on a schedule — check the board when you arrive.
Drive home from Corning on Route 390 north. From Rochester the drive is under 90 minutes. From NYC, head east on Route 17 to I-87 south — about 4 hours.
