Western New York
Niagara Falls Weekend Getaway
One of the world's great natural wonders — 90 minutes from Rochester
Niagara Falls is one of those places that still manages to exceed expectations. Three waterfalls — Horseshoe Falls, American Falls, and Bridal Veil Falls — collectively move more water than any other waterfall in North America. Standing at the railing with mist on your face, you understand why people have been making this trip for 200 years.
From Rochester, it's 90 minutes west on the 90. The US side has the better hiking and the state park; the Canadian side has the better view of Horseshoe Falls and a more developed tourist strip. A day trip covers both if you bring your passport. A full weekend lets you slow down and actually enjoy it.
Quick facts
Best time to go
Water flow peaks in spring — the falls are at their most powerful. Crowds are manageable before Memorial Day.
Peak season with the longest lines and highest prices. Book Maid of the Mist tickets in advance. Still worth it.
Foliage frames the gorge, crowds thin after Labor Day, and prices drop. Late September through October is the sweet spot.
The Ice Bridge forms in January and February. The falls partially freeze into dramatic ice formations. Cold but unforgettable.
What to do
Maid of the Mist
Must-doThe iconic boat tour runs from both the US and Canadian sides, taking you directly into the mist at the base of Horseshoe Falls. Book tickets online — lines move fast but sell out on summer weekends.
Cave of the Winds
Must-doWooden walkways descend into the gorge to the base of Bridal Veil Falls. The Hurricane Deck puts you close enough to get completely soaked. Ponchos and sandals provided.
Goat Island & Three Sisters Islands
FreeFree to walk. Goat Island sits between the American and Horseshoe falls with views of both. The Three Sisters Islands extend into the upper rapids — surprisingly peaceful given what's downstream.
Niagara Falls State Park
FreeThe oldest state park in the US, established in 1885. Trails along the gorge rim, observation decks, and the Prospect Point overlook directly above American Falls. Parking is the only cost.
Canadian Side: Table Rock & Clifton Hill
Passport requiredCross the Rainbow Bridge (passport required, $1 toll) for the best straight-on view of Horseshoe Falls from Table Rock. Clifton Hill is the tourist strip — kitschy but fun for families.
Niagara Gorge Trail
HikingA 7-mile trail along the US side of the gorge with views of the whirlpool and rapids downstream from the falls. Less crowded than the falls area and genuinely beautiful.
2-day itinerary
The falls, up close
Drive from Rochester (90 min). Check in, then head straight to Niagara Falls State Park. Walk Goat Island and the Three Sisters Islands before the crowds build.
Maid of the Mist boat tour. Book the first available slot — the experience is better in morning light. Bring a change of shirt.
Cave of the Winds. Then walk the gorge rim trail south toward the Whirlpool Bridge for views of the rapids.
Dinner in Lewiston (15 min north) — a quieter riverside village with better restaurants than the falls tourist strip. The falls are illuminated after dark; worth a quick return visit.
Canadian side + gorge trail
Cross the Rainbow Bridge to Canada (passport required). Table Rock gives you the straight-on view of Horseshoe Falls that the US side can't match. Journey Behind the Falls is worth the 30 minutes.
Lunch on the Canadian side, then cross back. Drive to Old Fort Niagara (30 min north) — a well-preserved 18th-century fort at the mouth of the Niagara River.
Niagara Gorge Trail for a quieter, less-touristy perspective on the river. The whirlpool section is the highlight.
Head back to Rochester or extend to Buffalo for dinner.
